There's a lady who's sure all that glitters is gold
And she's buying a stairway to Heaven
When she gets there she knows if the stores are all closed
With a word she can get what she came for
Ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh, and she's buying a stairway to Heaven
There's a sign on the wall, but she wants to be sure
'Cause you know sometimes words have two meanings
In a tree by the brook, there's a songbird who sings
Sometimes all of our thoughts are misgiven
Ooh, it makes me wonder
Ooh, makes me wonder
There's a feeling I get when I look to the West
And my spirit is crying for leaving
In my thoughts I have seen rings of smoke through the trees
And the voices of those who stand looking
Ooh, it makes me wonder
Ooh, really makes me wonder
You might also like
And it's whispered that soon if we all call the tune
Then the piper will lead us to reason
And a new day will dawn for those who stand long
And the forests will echo with laughter
Oh-oh-oh-oh-woah
If there's a bustle in your hedgerow, don't be alarmed now
It's just a spring clean for the May queen
Yes, there are two paths you can go by, but in the long run
There's still time to change the road you're on
And it makes me wonder
Oh, woah
Your head is humming and it won't go, in case you don't know
The piper's calling you to join him
Dear lady, can you hear the wind blow?
And did you know
Your stairway lies on the whispering wind? Oh
And as we wind on down the road
Our shadows taller than our soul
There walks a lady we all know
Who shines white light and wants to show
How everything still turns to gold
And if you listen very hard
The tune will come to you at last
When all are one, and one is all, yeah
To be a rock and not to roll
And she's buying a stairway to Heaven
footnotes
all of our thoughts are misgiven = our thoughts are full of worry and fear
if we all call the tune / Then the piper will lead us to reason = if we decide on the song together, the flute player will help us realise the truth
(The song repeatedly references the story of the Pied Piper of Hamelin, a man who was hired to lead all the rats out of Hamelin using a magical flute. The mayor of the city didn't pay for his services so the piper used his flute to to lead all of the children out of the city and they were never seen again. The story has many versions - in some all of the kids die, in others they are lead into a paradise-like land. In all of them the piper is trying to teach the mayor and the townfolk a lesson about greed and how there are more important things than money.)
hedgerow - bushes surrounding a road, a house or a garden (rząd krzewów lub żywopłot) usually creating a sort of boundary or border
If there's a bustle in your hedgerow, don't be alarmed now / It's just a spring clean for the May queen = don't be scared of what is happening, things are changing in preparation for a new beginning
Your head is humming and it won't go - there's a song in your head that you cannot get rid of
we wind on down the road = we move along the road
our shodows - here it can have a double meaning, in Jungian psychology a person's shodow is the part of their personality which they hide and reject, it's our "dark side"
to be a rock and not to roll - this is a wonderful twist of phrase combining references to two different idioms ("to be a rock" and "to be a rolling stone"), it's also an obvious pun on "rock and roll" (music)
